The Lutheran Academy in Martin, Slovakia |
The Lutheran Academy was created to be a place where children could come to know Jesus Christ, be free to ask the most important questions about life, God, and the world, and receive competent, high-quality Christian instruction. We have created an atmosphere that: Encourages openness Enhances the joy of discovery Helps children develop their intellectual, physical, emotional, social and spiritual talents Inspires them to use these gifts to the glory of God and service to others
We believe that a Lutheran elementary school is the most effective mission tool for making a great impact, not only on the lives of students, but also on the lives of their parents, families, and congregations. It is mission through education. The apostle Paul says that we need to teach in truth and love, giving the Word of Christ space in us so that we can teach with every detail in our lives - words and actions - in the name of Jesus.
Jozef Sopoliga, principal since the school's inception, also teaches math, science and computer science. He said, "We teach children with love and it shows. The children bring the gospel message home to their parents. They want to pray before meals and they want to be baptized." Sopoliga added, "Our little ones are the missionaries to their parents." Our school: The Lutheran congregation in Martin has provided its congregation house to be used for the school. Its rooms have been adapted for educational purposes. After some remodeling, there is now space for grades one through five. It is our dream to one day educate not only grades one through nine, but also high school students. Our school has a gym, a playground and two computer labs. We have classrooms in three different buildings on the campus. In addition, we offer safe, daily bus service to about 60% of our enrollment, both to students in Martin and in the neighboring villages. We have a movie theater and various concerts and programs in Martin throughout the year. Martin is only hours away from many historical cities (Bratislava, Slovakia; Krakow, Poland; Budapest, Hungary and Vienna, Austria). The bus and train connections are excellent for our American visitors to travel.
One of the main attractions of our school is its bilingual program. The school offers English as a foreign language beginning in the first grade, taught by native speakers. Each year since our school opened, we have had American volunteer teachers working with our students. Thanks to the dedication of these people, our school has developed a wonderful reputation.Won't you prayerfully consider how you might be a part of God's mission in Slovakia? |
